We get it.  Having grey hair in your beard makes you look old before your time.  And if you’re still young, or even if you’re not, it may not be the look you want to go for just yet.

Sure it may just look like a sprinkling of salt and pepper at first, but the grey, and sometimes white, can soon start to look more pronounced and noticeable.

Quite often a beard can start to go grey while the hair on your head has kept it’s rich, more youthful original color.  And when that happens it can make your grey beard look even more out of place.

And in these days of selfies and social media, it’s only natural that you would want to keep up appearances and have a style that’s truly you, and not some tired old guy you barely recognise.

So, in this article, we’re going to look at why your beard goes grey in the first place.  And we will also answer some of your most frequently asked questions on the subject.

And then... drum roll... we’re going to look at what you can do about it.  And the good news is that not only are there things you can do about it, but you don’t have to pay a barbershop to do it for you.  There are plenty of affordable and reasonably priced products that you can use right at home.  You’ll have your beard looking fly in no time.

What causes grey hair?

Some say grey hair is a sign of ageing, and to this day many people still think this way.  And in some ways they are correct, it is something that happens as we get older.  However sometimes men can start going grey as early as 23 years of age.  Which isn’t old at all.  More like the prime of their life.

Sometimes the beard and head grey at the same time, but quite often the beard will start greying first.

Others say that having kids makes your hair grey due to all the stress.  And while there does appear to be some evidence for stress being linked to grey hair, opinion is still pretty much divided on this issue.

Grey hair in your beard can also be caused by a number of other different factors.  (Please don’t panic when I list them.)  Grey hair in your beard can also be caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, alopecia, thyroid diseases, or benign tumors.

On the whole however aging, genetics and stress seem to be the main precedents in the process.

So, to sum up, having grey hair in your beard isn’t itself a sign of ill health, but if you suspect that your beard is going grey because of some sort of illness, then we strongly recommend seeing a doctor, just to be on the safe side.

How does beard hair turn grey?

Over time, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die.  And when there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and therefore will become a more transparent color, such as grey, silver or white.

And the reason why there’s so much debate about what causes hair to turn grey is because a number of different factors can influence when and at what rate your hair follicles will die.  To be fair, it’s a pretty difficult thing to study and draw definite conclusions on.

But with genetics playing such a huge factor, we’re going to go out on a limb and say that a greying beard cannot necessarily be prevented simply by avoiding stress and taking Vitamin B12.  And the older you get, the more likely that it is that your beard will start to go grey.

But that doesn’t mean to say there’s nothing you can do about it.  On the contrary, we’ve found some great products you can use to keep your beard looking dark and sexy.

And that leads us nicely onto our next section.

dye for grey beards

What can you do about grey hair in your beard?

OK, so there are two main routes you can go down to deal with the grey hair in your beard.  The most obvious one if you haven’t already guessed is to dye your beard the color you want.  The other is to use a special beard wash which gradually reduces the grey in your beard.

And in terms of dying your facial hair, you can either go for a more youthful color all over, or if you think it would look more appropriate, you could get yourself a beard dye that has just a touch of grey in it.

When you’re dying your beard we strongly recommend that you use a dye that’s specifically designed for beard (and mustache) hair.  This is because beard and facial hair is more coarse than the hair on your head, so you’ll need a dye that’s up to the task.

So we’ve scoured the net for the best anti-grey beard products, and we’ve handpicked our favorites to show you (in no particular order).

Best Anti-Grey Beard Products

Just For Men Mustache & Beard, Beard Dye for Men with Brush Included for Easy Application, With Biotin Aloe and Coconut Oil for Healthy Facial Hair - Dark Brown, M-45, Pack of 1

This is a hair dye specially developed for men’s beards and moustaches.

It’s super easy to use and all the things you will need are included in the box, including a special applicator and full instructions (there are also instructions on the Amazon page).

The end result will depend very much on just how grey your beard was to begin with, but regardless of that your beard will look thicker and fuller.

There are a variety of color options to choose from, and while darker is generally considered sexier, we strongly recommend that you go for a color that best suits your overall look.  The manufacturer recommends that if in any doubt, always go with the lighter shade.

Best Anti-Grey Beard Products

Just For Men Touch of Gray Mustache & Beard, Beard Coloring for Gray Hair with Brush Included for Easy Application, Great for a Salt and Pepper Look - Dark Brown & Black, B-45/55, Pack of 1

Please note, this beard and moustache dye is one that has just a touch of grey in it.

This makes it a good choice for older gents, say blokes of 40/50 years or older.  We all want to grow old as gracefully as possible, and when you eventually decide to let your hair grow grey it would look out of place if your beard didn’t follow suit.  Having a touch of grey in your beard looks much less fake than, say, dying it jet black.

It’s basically about your overall look.  On one hand a dark beard can still look good when you start to have crows feet wrinkles say.  But on the other hand, many feel that a touch of grey in their beard helps them appear more distinguished.

It also comes down to personal preference.  If you’re not sure whether to go for a dye with a touch of grey, it pays to ask your friends and family what they think.  You’ll be sure to get some honest replies.

It’s even easier to use than Just For Men’s regular beard and moustache dye, and comes with everything you need.

Just For Men Control GX Grey Reducing Beard Wash Shampoo, Gradually Colors Mustache and Beard, Leaves Facial Hair Softer and Fuller, 4 Fl Oz - Pack of 1

Rather than dying your beard, this is a shampoo for your beard that gradually reduces grey with each wash.  Your beard starts looking fuller from the start, and over time your beard grey is gradually reduced.

What we love about it is that the change is very gradual, which means many people won’t even notice that you’re making any changes at all, and will assume they’ve misjudged your natural look, rather than think you’ve started dying it.

It’s super easy to use, simply use it in place of your usual beard wash.

Better yet this product also helps to leave your beard feeling nice and soft.

Although there isn’t a range of color options to choose from, as you would find with beard dyes, the product shown here is suitable for shades from light brown through to black hair, so will suit the large majority of men.

If you decide to buy this product from Amazon, please be sure to select the right product because there are also grey reducing regular hair shampoos on the same Amazon page.  Only buy what you need.

If you buy this product via Amazon, again you may want to select Subscribe and Save, and save yourself up to 5% on auto-deliveries.  This is great because once you start using it you may not want to stop!
